Advice for New Bloggers Who Want to Grow Their Blog | #CollabmasInJuly

Let me preface this by saying, I personally don't think there's any 'right' way to become a successful blogger. Sure, half of it is drive, talent and hard work but the other half can just be sheer dumb luck! That said, there are definitely a few tips and good habits that you can pick up on the way to help you maximise your success and reach for readers as a new blogger.

1. Practice your photography.

It really pains me to say this, but your photography visuals play a massive role in how people engage with your posts. You might have the most eloquently written, informative piece, but without a visual aid most people will click off your page within a matter of seconds. Whether it's an infographic or a well photographed image of the product or topic you are talking about, it will grab your reader's attention and encourage them to continue reading.

2. Know what direction you want to head your blog in.

If writing a blog just for yourself is how far you want to go, then by all means leave it there. However, if you're feeling a bit more ambitious you might have already thought about how to take your blog to the next level and now it's just about figuring out in the direction you're heading in. Whether it's a personal blog, like myself- sharing personal opinions, thoughts and everyday life, or something more in depth and informative, used as a reference rather than for sharing personal opinions. Of course, any direction you choose has it's own value and capabilities, you've just got to choose the one that's right for you.

3. Be consistent.

Consistency is key when trying to reach an audience. If you want to have the same readers coming back and wanting to read your content each time you post, tell them when it is! For example, whether you're blogging every single day or 9am on a Friday morning, let your readers know. Tell them when to expect a new post so that they come back to your blog. If you find yourself inconsistent with your blogging, you'll similarly find inconsistencies with your numbers and audience reach and find it harder to build a loyal following of readers.

4. Be true to your voice.

It's important to focus on why you're writing and who you're writing for. Don't start writing a blog just to make $$$ and for 'fame'. You may very well end up the next Zoella, but your success is unlikely if you're focusing on numbers and not on producing great content. This is why my number one advice is to always write for yourself and stay true to who you are. Create content that you would like to read, or focus on a topic that interests you and you will find that writing those posts will be easier, flow more naturally and engage your readers.

5. Don't give up.

I can tell you from personal experience, on some days it will seem far easier to just give up and abandon all hope. However, if I look back on the days when I was feeling like that, I am ever so grateful that I didn't decide to give it all up because it was the easy way out. I persevered even when times got tough, whether it was a case of writer's block or something happening in my personal life, I'm so glad I didn't pack it all in and give up.

BONUS TIP: Read and comment on as many blogs as you can. You can always learn and pick up little things that other bloggers do to interact with their audience and try and apply it to your own blog to help interact and engage with your readers.

  4. I am alllllllllllll about the photography. Because blogs are so visual by nature I've always said the most important thing to get under your belt is a good understanding of your camera and how to edit your pictures. It makes all the difference to a blog! And if you've got good photography you can be damn sure I'll be following along perving on your camera skills...

  5. Very helpful post! It is true that blogging can be very hard when your personal life gets complicated or simply busier, but I also find it can really help, sometimes, to just spend a few hours writing a blog post, it calms me down so much!

  6. Hopped to over to read your post from Shireen's. So true that there is no right way to become a blogger but there are tried and true practices that will go a long way. I totally agree on being true to your voice. Most people are usually smart enough to pick up on when people aren't being real.

  10. Dropping by from Shireen's blog! Not giving up is definitely something I've had to internalize as a mantra over the time that I've been blogging. Whenever I am on the brink, though, I always remember why I started out blogging (which was so that I could have a way to express my creativity in the hopes of inspiring others) and dive back in just a bit more resolute than before.

These are all great advice, Anjelique, thank you for sharing!

  13. Being consistent and not giving up are important! I wanted to give up quite a few times but then decided to stick around since it is something I enjoy doing. Nowadays photography is important, that's one of the ways of taking attention. Whether you're playing big or not, it is important to be passionate about what you do. When you are passionate about something you love doing then sooner or later, it will pay off!

  14. I just came over from Shireens blog.
Not giving up s very important I have been there so many times, with personal life getting in the way and just feeling under pressure or jealous of other peoples success. But I am glad I didn't and I am glad with where I am right now.

  21. Thanks for these tips - even as a blogger who is two years on the blogosphere, I still find myself struggling every now and then - especially with consistency. To upgrade my photography, I got a new camera (Nikon D5200) which really really helped!

Also - investing in a neat and clean blogger template might help as well!
